Jerusalem Syndrome
Director: Emanuel Naccache & Stephane Belaisch
2008 / Israel, France / 87 Minutes, Hebrew, French, English w/Eng. Subtitles
A sexy Israeli soldier, a moped delivery guy, an escaped French mental patient who thinks he’s a prophet, a new-age feminist, and a yeshiva student with a sacred Streimel walk into a brothel in Tel Aviv to save a Russian prostitute from her evil Georgian pimp. The getaway car: a stolen jitney taxi. The destination: a meditation festival in the desert and freedom…in South America? The problem: the pimp wants his prostitute and the French authorities want their countryman who suffers from the Jerusalem syndrome, a mental phenomenon causing prophetic delusions. The ensuing cross-country chase reveals that beneath the surface Israelis from all walks of life brought together by chance can unite for a common, if unusual, purpose. This bizarre and hilarious road movie captures the unique peculiarities of life in contemporary Israel and reminds us that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.
