I Shall Remember

Director: Vitaly Vorobiev
2010/Russia/97 minutes
Russian with English Subtitles

Half Russian, half Greek, Vadik is a street smart 13 year old living in a seaside village in occupied Southern Russia in 1942. He wants to admire his father who has recently returned from a prison camp. But when other men volunteer for the front and his father stays home instead, Vadik’s disappointment and contempt is clear. The fact that his family risks their lives to hide Milka, a Jewish boy, in their attic is not the sort of heroism he envisions. As Vadik becomes friends with Milka he eventually comes to understand the enormity of his father’s seemingly innocent daily activities, and that the persona he portrays publically is a persuasive mask that is critical to the survival of many, including his own family. This Russian historical drama is based on a true story of courage and friendship.
