Author Caroline Stoessinger, A Century of Wisdom: Lessons from the Life of Alice Herz-Sommer AND Panel Discussion/ Preview of Journey of the Human Spirit
Hear the story of the oldest living holocaust survivor, Alice Herz-Sommer. At 108, Herz-Sommer continues to live a life without bitterness – still practicing piano several hours a day and believing that she is “richer than the world’s richest person because I am a musician”. Her inspiring story of resilience and optimism is chronicled in Caroline Stoessinger’s book A Century of Wisdom: Lessons from the Life of Alice Herz-Sommer. Join Ms. Stoessinger as she uses narrative, video footage and a piano performance to relate this deeply moving biography demonstrating the power of music to inspire even during the darkest of times.
The presentation will be followed immediately by a panel discussion on the topic “Arts During Difficult Times” featuring Caroline Stoessinger as well as a distinguished panel of some of Colorado’s most important cultural leaders including Garrett Ammon, Artistic Director, Ballet Nouveau; Pat Pearce, General/Artistic Director, Central City Opera; Tony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony and Steve Wilson, Executive Artistic Director, MACC/Artistic Director, PHAMALY. The panel will discuss their upcoming colossal collaboration entitled Journey of the Human Spirit that will feature an evening of two ground-breaking Colorado premieres: Viktor Ullmann’s opera, “The Emperor of Atlantis,” (created while Ullmann was imprisoned in Theresienstadt concentration camp/ghetto WITH Alice Herz-Sommer whom Ullmann knew well) and the original dance, “From Darkness to Light,” created by nationally renowned choreographer Garrett Ammon, artistic director of Ballet Nouveau Colorado, to music composed by Ofer Ben-Amots, an internationally acclaimed Israeli-born composer and chair of the Music Department of Colorado College.
